The Knox County
Sheriff's Office responded to two traumatic incidents this past weekend. On
6/23/17 (Friday night) at approximately 11:00 p.m., Sgt. Lance Mitchell, Deputy
Jeremy Joslyn and Deputy Scott Redmun responded to a report of a female with a
gunshot wound in St. George. Sgt. Mitchell and Deputy Joslyn arrived to find 22-year-old
Amber Libbey had sustained a gunshot wound to her abdomen. Her live-in
boyfriend, 21-year-old Sam Ryan reported that he was asleep and awoke to the
sound of the gunshot. Sgt. Mitchell and Deputy Joslyn immediately started
administering first aid with the assistance of Deputy Redmun who arrived
several minutes later. The Deputies continued to tend to the wound and blood
loss until St. George Rescue arrived on scene. The Deputies investigated the
incident and found that Libbey had picked up the loaded 9mm handgun and it had
accidently discharged into her abdomen. Libbey was transported to Pen Bay
medical Center, Rockport, where she was in stable condition.
On 6/24/17, at
approximately 8:30 am (Saturday morning) Sgt. John palmer, Deputy Paul Pinkham
and Deputy Paul Spear responded to the report of a 2 ½ week old girl who had
died during the night in Warren. The death was discovered by the 26-year-old
father and 21-year-old mother who immediately reported the death to the Knox County
Sheriff's Office. The Deputies secured the scene and responded to Pen bay
Medical Center until the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit could respond and
continue the investigation. According to Maine Protocol, the State Police Major
Crimes Unit investigates all deaths of children under the age of 3 years old.
