County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motorcycle crash on Rt. 73 near Alsak
Farm Rd. in South Thomaston on Thursday at around 2:10 p.m.
Wayne
Fowles, 59, of Spruce Head was travelling south on Rt. 73 when he traveled off
the side of the road and lost control in the gravel portion along the
ditch. Fowles’ 1997 Harley Davidson hit
a culvert and he was ejected off the bike across a driveway.
Fowles
was transported by Life-flight of Maine to Maine Medical Center with serious
injuries.
Deputy
Arthur Smith is investigating to determine a cause.
South
Thomaston Fire and Ambulance was assisted by Rockland Fire and Rescue at the
scene.

Female Bicyclist Injured in Collision with Vehicle in Saint George - August 3, 2017
Just
before 7 p.m. on August 3, 2017, Deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office
responded to a reported vehicle and bicycle crash on Rt. 131 (Port Clyde Road)
in Saint George, near Ridge Road.
According to witness statements, a 21-year-old female, riding a bicycle, was traveling in the southbound lane of Rt. 131, riding toward Port Clyde. The bicycle was struck by a car, operated by a 17-year-old female, which was travelling in the same direction on Rt. 131.
The 21-year-old female bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was taken via Lifeflight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She is reported as being in serious but stable condition. The 17-year-old female did not sustain any physical injuries.
Port Clyde Road was shut down for several hours while Deputies investigated. The cause has yet to be determined; details will be released as they are known. Names are being withheld until notifications are verified.
Assistance was provided by Knox Regional Communications Center, Saint George Fire &Ambulance, and Lifeflight of Maine.

Rt. 1 Crash in Warren - July 17, 2017

after 5 p.m. on Monday, July 17th, Deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to
a call of a two vehicle head-on crash on Rt. 1(Atlantic Highway) in Warren near
Sandy Shores Rd.
According to witness statements, Joseph Kennedy, was in his vehicle stopped facing northbound waiting to turn left in traffic when April Pease, 28 of Pittston operating a 2006 Chevrolet sedan was unable to stop in time travelling in the same direction. Pease swerved to the right to avoid hitting Kennedy from behind and lost control of her vehicle. She swerved towards the ditch and apparently over-corrected, going around Kennedy’s vehicle and proceeded in to the southbound lane striking a 2011 Honda sedan almost head-on. Richard Zauft, 63, of Sudbury, Massachusetts was travelling southbound and could not react in time to avoid being hit by Pease.
Zauft and a passenger in Zauft’s car along with April Pease sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Pen-Bay Medical Center. Pease was issued a summons for an illegal pass.
Assistance was provided by Knox County Regional Communications Center, Warren Fire and Ambulance Dept., Waldoboro Ambulance, and Thomaston Ambulance.

Route 17 Fatality - July 16, 2017
Just
before 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, Deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded
to a call of a two vehicle crash on Heald Highway (Rt. 17) in Union at the
intersection of Town House Rd.
The Deputies arrived and found that a 1968 Harley Davidson Motorcycle, driven by Ronald Moon, 64, of Waldoboro had struck the back of a 2016 Audi SUV, driven by Chaturvedi Alok, 57 of New Delhi, as it was pulling onto Heald Highway from Town House Road.
The passenger on the back of the motorcycle, Felicity Davidson, 63, of Rockport was not wearing a helmet and was ejected from the motorcycle. Ms. Davidson was pronounced dead at the scene. Moon suffered broken bones and was transported to Penobscot Bay Medical Center. There were no injuries sustained to people in the Audi.
Apparently, Alok pulled out onto Heald Highway not seeing the motorcycle as it crested the hill travelling eastbound. Neither speed nor any impairment is believed to be contributing factors. The investigation will be continued by Deputy Daniel Landers.
This is the 6th fatality on Knox County roads since May 1st. Please stay alert, avoid distractions, wear your seatbelts and watch your speed.

Two Fatalities in Head-on Collision in Union - July 12, 2017
Just
before 5 p.m. on July 12, Deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded
to a call of a two vehicle head-on crash on Rt. 17 in Union, just east of
Shepard Hill Rd.
Sherry Cloutier, 52, of Augusta, operating a 2011 Ford Sedan, was driving west on Rt. 17. For some unknown reason, Cloutier crossed the center line and struck a 2002 Saab sedan operated by Angela Knight-Boege, 49, of Warren, who had been travelling eastbound, head-on.
Both Cloutier and Knight-Boege were pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers in either vehicle. Rt.17 was shut down to traffic for nearly 3 hours before crews were able to clear the road.
Assistance was provided by Knox County Regional Communications Center, Union Fire and Ambulance Dept., Northeast Ambulance, and Washington Fire Dept.

Three Knox County Sheriff's Office Employees Recognized for Service June 30, 2017
Sheriff
Donna Dennison recognized three Knox County Deputies at their last patrol
meeting held on June 30, 2017.
Deputy Nathaniel Jack was given a life saving award for his efforts on May 18th. While on his way home, Deputy Jack came across an accident involving a truck and a motorcycle. The operator of the motorcycle struck the back end of the truck and was thrown from his bike, receiving a severe laceration to his leg. Deputy Jack used his training and experience from the military and law enforcement to apply a tourniquet. Medical professionals from EMS and the hospital stated that Deputy Jack’s actions very likely saved the man’s life.
Deputy John Hansen has decided to retire after 25 years in law enforcement. Along with agencies in other states, he served the Knox County Sheriff’s Office from 1992-1996 and again from 2010 to current. Sheriff Dennison thanked him for his service. Deputy Hansen will stay on in a part-time capacity.
Lieutenant Reginald Walker was recognized for his anniversary date of June 6th, 2017 being his 30th year with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Lt. Walker has served in almost every capacity with the Sheriff’s Office in his 30 years. He has been a dispatcher, patrol deputy, patrol supervisor, patrol administrator, detective and currently serves as the Detective Supervisor. Lt. Walker is also the agency’s polygraph examiner. His institutional knowledge is invaluable. He has been a great mentor and friend to everyone in the Sheriff’s Office, past and present. We do expect him to stay around to receive recognition for a 50th year of service as well…..he wasn’t so sure of that.

Penobscot Island Air Mail Plane Crashes on Vinalhaven - June 26, 2017
At approximately 7:41 a.m. on the morning of June 26, 2017, Knox County Sheriff's Deputies
Robert Potter and Paul Simonetti responded to the airstrip on the island of
Vinalhaven for a reported plane crash.
A small plane belonging to Penobscot Island Air delivering mail to the island crashed at the end of the runway into some trees. The pilot, Ted Weslake, was alert and conscious with apparent injuries, though the extent are yet unknown. He was up and walking but could not remember what happened. Mr. Weslake was flown to PBMC in Rockport. The FAA has been notified of the incident.
More information will be released as it becomes available.

Two Traumatic Incidents - Gunshot Wound June 23 & Infant Death June 24, 2017
The Knox County
Sheriff's Office responded to two traumatic incidents this past weekend. On
6/23/17 (Friday night) at approximately 11:00 p.m., Sgt. Lance Mitchell, Deputy
Jeremy Joslyn and Deputy Scott Redmun responded to a report of a female with a
gunshot wound in St. George. Sgt. Mitchell and Deputy Joslyn arrived to find 22-year-old
Amber Libbey had sustained a gunshot wound to her abdomen. Her live-in
boyfriend, 21-year-old Sam Ryan reported that he was asleep and awoke to the
sound of the gunshot. Sgt. Mitchell and Deputy Joslyn immediately started
administering first aid with the assistance of Deputy Redmun who arrived
several minutes later. The Deputies continued to tend to the wound and blood
loss until St. George Rescue arrived on scene. The Deputies investigated the
incident and found that Libbey had picked up the loaded 9mm handgun and it had
accidently discharged into her abdomen. Libbey was transported to Pen Bay
medical Center, Rockport, where she was in stable condition.

South Thomaston Fatal Accident - May 25, 2017
On May 25th the Knox
County Sheriff’s Office investigated a single vehicle crash involving three
people. The crash occurred on Rt. 131 in South Thomaston near Alder Lane. One passenger, Zachary Elwell,
21, of St. George was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Kelsey Campbell,
19, of South Thomaston and another passenger, Austin Jurkowski, 19 of St.
George were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Witnesses stated that the car was travelling at a high rate of speed and had just passed a vehicle before losing control and going off the road, striking many trees and rolling over multiple times. The deceased person was ejected from the vehicle. It is also believed that alcohol is a contributing factor.
Knox County Sheriff’s Office Reconstruction and Mapping Teams are continuing with the investigation.
South Thomaston Fire and Ambulance, St. George Fire Dept. and Thomaston Fire Dept. also assisted at the scene as well as Knox County Regional Communications Dispatchers helping coordination of all involved.

Knox County Sheriff's Office seeking help from the public - Missing Person from Lewiston - Kevin Mitchell
The
Knox County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a person reported missing out of
Lewiston. At approximately 9:15 p.m. last
night, Deputies were called regarding a suspicious vehicle located on Mt.
Pleasant Rd. in Union. Information
gathered there led them to the vehicle belonging to a Kevin Mitchell, 44, of
Lewiston.
Mitchell has been reported missing by his wife since Saturday. Mitchell apparently has ties in this area from when he was younger. A search of the area where the vehicle was located by Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Maine Warden Service K-9 Units has not turned up anything.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is concerned for his well being and seeking the assistance of the local public for any information leading to the whereabouts of Mr. Mitchell. He is described as 6 ft. 1 inch tall, 220 lbs. with graying hair and blue eyes.

Two Deceased in Fatal Accident on Route 1 in Warren - May 1, 2017

Apparently, for a reason not known at this time, a vehicle driven by Kenneth Chipman III, 57 of Warren, travelling northbound, crossed the centerline. The 2017 Toyota sedan collided with a southbound 2007 Toyota SUV driven by Evan Aurelio, 32, of Winterport along the driver’s side, spinning that vehicle around and then Chipman struck head-on into a 2008 Land Rover SUV, driven by Cheryl Brimson, 67, of Rockport. John Brimson, (husband) 68, also of Rockport was a passenger in the vehicle.
Kenneth Chipman III and Cheryl Brimson were killed instantly. John Brimson was taken to the hospital by Warren Ambulance and Aurelio was checked at the scene by EMS and released after being interviewed.
Knox County Sheriff’s Office response team is currently mapping and reconstructing the crash to try to determine a cause. Road remains closed.
Warren and Waldoboro Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.

Law Enforcement Conducting Safety Checkpoints in Knox County
Spring has apparently sprung here in
Knox County. With that said, Sheriff Dennison would like to make the citizens
of Knox County and our visitors aware that Deputies, along with the assistance
of local law enforcement, will be conducting public safety checkpoints, or
roadblocks, throughout the county this year.
Checkpoints serve several purposes: detecting impaired drivers, motor vehicle and conservation law compliance checks, criminal investigation information gathering, and high-risk incident isolation. At the end of the day, we conduct them to safeguard you and your families from risky drivers and incidents.
We will be conducting checkpoints at varying times and locations throughout Knox County, often times with no notice other than this press release.
Please double check that your vehicle is properly registered, inspected, and insured. Ensure that you and your passengers are properly secured. Please do not engage in texting messaging. Finally, watch your speed and pay attention to your surroundings. Many areas of the county are undergoing road construction and the speed limits have been changed. Many of these changes are enforceable regardless of whether workers are present or not.

Vehicle Crashes into a House on Western Road in Warren - April 10, 2017
Knox
County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Redmun responded to a crash on Western
Road in Warren at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Monday. The report came into Knox Regional
Communications Center as a car had hit a house.
Deputy Redmun arrived on scene and spoke with the single occupant/operator of the vehicle, Bridget Artibani, 32, of Warren. Artibani was driving a 2009 Ford sedan. Artibani stated she believed that she lost the power steering in her car that caused her to go off the road and strike the house. Artibani sustained minor injuries to her face and was transported to Penobscot Bay Medical Center. No one inside the residence was injured.
Warren Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene. The crash is believed to be alcohol related.

Two Vehicle Crashes - Hope and Owls Head - April 6, 2017

Hope: Deputy Scott Redmun responded to a
reported crash on the Camden Road in Hope at 8:15 p.m. last night. Joshua Gray, 33, of Union stated he swerved
to avoid a small dog in the road and lost control of the 2008 GMC Utility truck
he was operating. The vehicle travelled
along the ditch before riding upon an embankment that caused the truck to
rollover on its’ driver’s side. Gray
complained of leg pain but refused treatment. It was discovered that Gray’s license was also suspended and was
summonsed for same by Deputy Redmun. The
truck was towed from the scene.
Hope Fire Dept. and Northeast Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Knox County Jail Positions Open!

Aggravated Assault Arrest of Travis Reed of Friendship - March 12, 2017
At
approximately 5:00 a.m., Sunday, March 12th, Knox County Sheriff’s
Deputies were called to Maine General Hospital after receiving information that
someone was there with obvious signs of being in a fight in Friendship.
Deputy Jeremy Joslyn went to the hospital to talk with the victim. The victim stated he had been at a residence in Friendship and questioned a Travis P. Reed, 19, of Friendship regarding statements he was saying about him. The victim stated that Travis started punching him in the face and didn’t stop after making contact many times. The victim stated there were witnesses to the altercation. The hospital confirmed he had many facial fractures.
Deputy Joslyn obtained a warrant for Reed’s arrest and he was found later that day. Reed was arrested without incident and due to the seriousness of the injuries was charged with Class B, felony, aggravated assault.
Reed remains at the Knox County Jail.

OUI Arrest of Brandi Griffin of Waldoboro - March 11, 2017
Knox
County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Redmun received a complaint from the Regional
Communications Center at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11th
regarding a woman possibly driving a vehicle while intoxicated. Information received was that she was
operating in Warren at the time and headed towards Waldoboro. Deputy Redmun was in the area and through
communications with dispatch and the complainant was able to locate the
vehicle.
Deputy Redmun stopped the alleged vehicle and identified the operator as Brandi Griffin, 31, of Waldoboro. Based on the Deputy’s observations and investigation, Ms. Griffin was arrested and charged with 5 misdemeanors of Operating Under the Influence, Violation of Conditions of Release, Unlawful Possession of Schedule “Z” Drugs, and due to the fact she had two young children in the car, she was also charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Griffin remains at Knox County Jail.

Deputy Paul Pinkham conducted a traffic stop in Warren. Kyle Ilvonen, 24, of Camden, was summoned for Failure to Display Valid Inspection.
Sergeant Matthew Elwell responded to the report of damaged personal property in South Thomaston, the incident is under investigation.
Dep. Scott Redmun responded to the report of a hit and run traffic crash in So. Thomaston. Scott Elwell, 53, of Saint George, lost control of his vehicle due to impairment, went off the roadway, and struck a tree. Elwell returned to the roadway and continued to an address in St. George. The vehicle sustained inoperable damage. No injuries were reported. Elwell was arrested for Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Operating without a License, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash, and Failure to Report Crash by Quickest Means.
Dep. Arthur Smith conducted a bail compliance check in Warren. Jason Fogg, 26, of Warren, was arrested for Violation of Conditional Release.
Deputies Jeremy Joslyn and A. Smith responded to Rockland to assist in tracking a burglary suspect. The suspect was located and arrested by Rockland Police Department.

Knox County Sheriff's Office Honors Its Employees
On the
night of February 4th, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office held its
annual employee recognition banquet at “The Landings” restaurant in
Rockland. There were approximately 50
people in attendance to see those receiving awards for accomplishments made in
2016. Sheriff Dennison recognized 6
people total for their heroic and leadership duties as members of the Knox
County Sheriff’s Office, and one person with a special recognition for his
service to the Office as well as the whole community of Knox County.
The first two recipients of awards were for lifesaving actions in the course of duty.
Corrections Officer Dennis Palmer rescued an inmate one night from attempting to harm himself in the cell he was in. The inmate had made no communications or signs of wanting to harm themselves, but due to Officer Palmer’s quick response, the person was saved and assisted to get the help they needed.
Lt. Patrick Polky was on duty the night of September 7, 2016 when he responded to a call that a person had communicated to dispatch that he was in distress. Upon Lt. Polky’s arrival, as he was exiting his cruiser, he heard a gunshot. Lt. Polky initially took a defensive tactical response not knowing whether he was being shot at or not. Once he verbally engaged with the subject he saw that the person had shot himself. Lt. Polky immediately called for EMS response and began lifesaving measures as the person had shot himself in the chest. The person has since recovered from his wounds and is back to work.
Two supervisors were recognized for their leadership in the jail and patrol. Sgt. Elmer Sweetland and Sgt. Matthew Elwell, respectively, were awarded “Supervisor of the Year” citations for their work as leaders within the organization.
Brandon Mosher was awarded “Corrections Officer of the Year” and Paul Spear as “Deputy of the Year”. Both were recognized for their work ethic and attitude as being outstanding in their profession.
Sheriff Dennison presented a special award to Walker Hutchins of “Burpee, Carpenter, and Hutchins Funeral Home” of Rockland. Sheriff Dennison thanked him for all the work he has done and helped us with over the years. Chief Deputy Carroll stated, “We wanted to recognize a person that we; unfortunately, see during troubling times in our professions. There is no better man, in his profession, than Walker Hutchins. When times are at their worst, Walker has a calming affect for all involved. I can speak for us in law enforcement, that even we feel better and know that things are going to be o.k. when Walker shows up on scene. This community is very fortunate to have someone like Walker in it.”

Don't Say "Yes"! Watch out for phone scammers!
Scammers
are using recordings of a victim's own voice to try to convince them to send
money.
According to recent reports, when a victim answers the phone, the scammer asks "Can you hear me?" or some other question. When the victim answers "yes" the response is recorded and the scammer later uses that recording to try to convince the victim that they have agreed to pay the scammer money.
It is important to know that just because you hear a recording of your voice saying "yes" it does not mean that you owe anyone money. The debt would only be valid if BOTH parties know what is being offered and agree to the payment for services or goods.
Don't allow yourself to be persuaded to send anyone money unless you have previously agreed to purchase the goods or services and on the price.
