Aggravated Assault Arrest of Travis Reed of Friendship - March 12, 2017

At approximately 5:00 a.m., Sunday, March 12^th, Knox County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to Maine General Hospital after receiving information that someone was there with obvious signs of being in a fight in Friendship.

Deputy Jeremy Joslyn went to the hospital to talk with the victim.  The victim stated he had been at a residence in Friendship and questioned a Travis P. Reed, 19, of Friendship regarding statements he was saying about him. The victim stated that Travis started punching him in the face and didn’t stop after making contact many times. The victim stated there were witnesses to the altercation.  The hospital confirmed he had many facial fractures.

Deputy Joslyn obtained a warrant for Reed’s arrest and he was found later that day. Reed was arrested without incident and due to the seriousness of the injuries was charged with Class B, felony, aggravated assault.

Reed remains at the Knox County Jail.

OUI Arrest of Brandi Griffin of Waldoboro - March 11, 2017

Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Redmun received a complaint from the Regional Communications Center at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11^th regarding a woman possibly driving a vehicle while intoxicated.  Information received was that she was operating in Warren at the time and headed towards Waldoboro.  Deputy Redmun was in the area and through communications with dispatch and the complainant was able to locate the vehicle.

Deputy Redmun stopped the alleged vehicle and identified the operator as Brandi Griffin, 31, of Waldoboro.  Based on the Deputy’s observations and investigation, Ms. Griffin was arrested and charged with 5 misdemeanors of Operating Under the Influence, Violation of Conditions of Release, Unlawful Possession of Schedule “Z” Drugs, and due to the fact she had two young children in the car, she was also charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Griffin remains at Knox County Jail.

Jan 29

Deputy Paul Pinkham conducted a traffic stop in Warren. Kyle Ilvonen, 24, of Camden, was summoned for Failure to Display Valid Inspection.

Sergeant Matthew Elwell responded to the report of damaged personal property in South Thomaston, the incident is under investigation.

Dep. Scott Redmun responded to the report of a hit and run traffic crash in So. Thomaston. Scott Elwell, 53, of Saint George, lost control of his vehicle due to impairment, went off the roadway, and struck a tree. Elwell returned to the roadway and continued to an address in St. George. The vehicle sustained inoperable damage. No injuries were reported. Elwell was arrested for Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Operating without a License, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash, and Failure to Report Crash by Quickest Means.

Dep. Arthur Smith conducted a bail compliance check in Warren. Jason Fogg, 26, of Warren, was arrested for Violation of Conditional Release.

Deputies Jeremy Joslyn and A. Smith responded to Rockland to assist in tracking a burglary suspect. The suspect was located and arrested by Rockland Police Department.

Jan 30

Dep. Nathaniel Jack responded to a traffic crash in Union. Vicky Elston, 49, of Belgrade, lost control of her vehicle due to distraction, went off the roadway, and struck a utility pole. The vehicle sustained disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

Dep. Robert Potter responded to the report of missing property on Vinalhaven, the incident is under investigation.

Sgt. John Palmer responded to the report of missing property in Warren, the incident is under investigation.

Sgt. Palmer conducted a wanted person check in Rockland. Shayne Elwell, 29, of Rockland, was arrested on an Arrest Warrant.

Detective Justin Twitchell responded to the report of a non-compliant sex offender. Jeffrey Sparks, 50, of St. George, was arrested for Failure to Comply with the Sex Offender Registration Act.

Dep. Joslyn and Det. Twitchell responded to the report of a vehicle off the road in Owls Head. Dep. Joslyn summoned Shawn Dishop, 47, of So. Thomaston, for Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle and Failure to Produce Evidence of Insurance.

Dep. Paul Spear responded to a traffic crash in Warren. Erik Hoagland, 33, of Damariscotta, lost control of his vehicle due to slush, went off the roadway, and came to rest in a ditch. The vehicle sustained disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

Dep. Jack responded to a traffic crash in Warren. Bobby Young, 41, of Warren, lost control of her vehicle due to slush, crossed the roadway, and struck a tree. The vehicle sustained disabling damage. Minor injuries were reported.

Dep. Spear responded to a traffic crash in Warren. Beverly Sager, 67, of Longmeadow, MA, lost control of his vehicle due to slush, went off the roadway, and struck several trees. The vehicle sustained disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

Dep. Potter responded to a traffic crash on Vinalhaven. Michael Gale, 44, of Vinalhaven, lost control of his vehicle due to speed and icy roads, went off the roadway, and struck a boulder. The vehicle sustained disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

Sgt. Elwell conducted a traffic stop in Washington. Jared Palmer, 35, of Washington, was summoned for Failure to Display Current Certificate of Inspection.

Dep. Curt Andrick conducted a wanted person check in Rockland. Ashley-Nichole Roman, 29, of Rockland, was arrested on an Arrest Warrant.

Sgt. Mitchell and Dep. Joslyn responded to a traffic crash in Warren. Michael Tucker, 26, of So. Thomaston, went off the roadway when he failed to comply with a traffic warning sign and struck a boulder. The vehicle sustained disabling damage. Major injuries were reported.

Dep. Joslyn conducted a traffic stop in Hope. Dennis Wadsworth, 45, of Union, was summoned for Exceeding Speed Limit by 30 MPH or More.

Dep. Joslyn conducted a wanted person check in Rockland. Carlton Elliott, 28, of Waldoboro, was arrested on an Arrest Warrant.

Knox County Sheriff's Office Honors Its Employees

On the night of February 4^th, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office held its annual employee recognition banquet at “The Landings” restaurant in Rockland.  There were approximately 50 people in attendance to see those receiving awards for accomplishments made in 2016. Sheriff Dennison recognized 6 people total for their heroic and leadership duties as members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, and one person with a special recognition for his service to the Office as well as the whole community of Knox County.  

The first two recipients of awards were for lifesaving actions in the course of duty. 

Corrections Officer Dennis Palmer rescued an inmate one night from attempting to harm himself in the cell he was in. The inmate had made no communications or signs of wanting to harm themselves, but due to Officer Palmer’s quick response, the person was saved and assisted to get the help they needed.

Lt. Patrick Polky was on duty the night of September 7, 2016 when he responded to a call that a person had communicated to dispatch that he was in distress. Upon Lt. Polky’s arrival, as he was exiting his cruiser, he heard a gunshot. Lt. Polky initially took a defensive tactical response not knowing whether he was being shot at or not.  Once he verbally engaged with the subject he saw that the person had shot himself.  Lt. Polky immediately called for EMS response and began lifesaving measures as the person had shot himself in the chest. The person has since recovered from his wounds and is back to work. 

Two supervisors were recognized for their leadership in the jail and patrol. Sgt. Elmer Sweetland and Sgt. Matthew Elwell, respectively, were awarded “Supervisor of the Year” citations for their work as leaders within the organization. 

Brandon Mosher was awarded “Corrections Officer of the Year” and Paul Spear as “Deputy of the Year”. Both were recognized for their work ethic and attitude as being outstanding in their profession. 

Sheriff Dennison presented a special award to Walker Hutchins of “Burpee, Carpenter, and Hutchins Funeral Home” of Rockland. Sheriff Dennison thanked him for all the work he has done and helped us with over the years. Chief Deputy Carroll stated, “We wanted to recognize a person that we; unfortunately, see during troubling times in our professions. There is no better man, in his profession, than Walker Hutchins. When times are at their worst, Walker has a calming affect for all involved. I can speak for us in law enforcement, that even we feel better and know that things are going to be o.k. when Walker shows up on scene. This community is very fortunate to have someone like Walker in it.”

Don't Say "Yes"! Watch out for phone scammers!

Scammers are using recordings of a victim's own voice to try to convince them to send money.

According to recent reports, when a victim answers the phone, the scammer asks "Can you hear me?" or some other question. When the victim answers "yes" the response is recorded and the scammer later uses that recording to try to convince the victim that they have agreed to pay the scammer money.

It is important to know that just because you hear a recording of your voice saying "yes" it does not mean that you owe anyone money. The debt would only be valid if BOTH parties know what is being offered and agree to the payment for services or goods.

Don't allow yourself to be persuaded to send anyone money unless you have previously agreed to purchase the goods or services and on the price.

Arrest of Robert Allen Edwards, Jr. of South Thomaston - January 31, 2017

On January 31, 2017 at approximately 5:30 PM, the Knox Regional Communications Center received a 911 call from an address on Buttermilk Lane in South Thomaston. The caller reported that a male was “freaking out” and throwing himself under a vehicle that was trying to leave the residence. During the call, the Dispatcher was able to hear a struggle for the phone and received additional information that the male was not allowing anyone to leave the residence.

Knox County Sheriff’s Deputies were notified and started toward the location. Units from the Thomaston Police Department and the Maine Marine Patrol also responded to the residence based on information that the male had a violent history. Units arrived on scene within minutes and were able to separate all parties involved and quickly investigate.

Robert Allen Edwards Jr., 34, of South Thomaston, was arrested for Domestic Violence Assault, Domestic Violence Criminal Threatening, Domestic Violence Terrorizing, and Criminal Restraint.

Edwards is currently confined at the Knox County Jail and bail has been set at $10,000.00 cash.

Dep. Smith responded to a traffic crash in Hope. Rachel Ripley, 25, of Hope, struck a deer on Barnestown Rd. The vehicle sustained functional damage and no injuries reported.

Jan 17

Dep. Robert Potter responded to a traffic crash on Vinalhaven. Patrick Gasperini, 28, of Vinalhaven, died at the hospital while being treated for injuries he sustained. The crash is under investigation.

Dep. Paul Spear conducted a traffic stop in Cushing. Shanon Lafrance, 45, of Cushing, was summoned for Operating after License Suspension.

Dep. Joslyn and Sgt. Mitchell responded to the report of a traffic crash in Warren. Shane Stockbridge, 22, of Warren, rolled his snowmobile on an ice bank on Depot Rd. The vehicle sustained functional damage and Stockbridge was taken to the hospital for injuries.

Deputies Pinkham and Joslyn conducted a wanted person’s check in Rockland. Dep. Joslyn arrested Danica Miller, 21, of Warren on an Arrest Warrant.

Dep. Smith and Sgt. Mitchell responded to the report of a traffic crash in St. George. Kyle Clough, 24, of St. George, was following Christian Dehlinger, 56, of Rockland, too closely and was unable to stop when Dehlinger began to slow down for a stopped school bus on the River Rd. Clough and Dehlinger’s vehicles were towed due to disabling damage. Dehlinger was taken to the hospital for injuries.

Deputies Joslyn, Gordon, and Sgt. Lance Mitchell responded to the report of a domestic assault in Washington. The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of Deputies. A temporary warrant for Domestic Violence Terrorizing, Criminal Threatening, and Aggravated Assault was issued on Brandon Klein, 32, of Washington.

Following a wanted person check in Rockland, Dep. Pinkham arrested Thomas Powell, 25, of Friendship, on an Arrest Warrant.

Fatal Accident on Vinalhaven - January 17, 2017

On January 17, 2017, at approximately 12:00 PM, Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Rob Potter responded to a single vehicle crash on the Lands Island Rd. on Vinalhaven.  A 2016 Dodge Truck, driven by Patrick Gasperini, 28, of Vinalhaven reportedly crashed in to a large tree and rolled over.  Although Gasperini was conscious and alert at the scene and was assisted by rescue personnel to the waiting ambulance, Gasperini died at the hospital due to the extent of internal injuries he had suffered. 

Prior to the crash, witnesses reported seeing a black Dodge pickup truck travel past them at a high rate of speed. After passing them, the truck ran head-on into a large tree, rolled about 100 feet, and came to rest in a group of rocks at the bottom of a steep embankment.

From statements made by Gasperini at the scene, Deputy Potter believes there was a medical issue prior to the crash.    

The crash is still under investigation.  Deputy Potter was assisted at the scene by Vinalhaven Fire and EMS.

Meet Knox County Lieutenant Patrick Polky!

Sheriff Donna Dennison and Chief Deputy Tim Carroll announce the promotion of Patrick Polky of St. George to the rank of Lieutenant as the new Patrol Administrator for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Lieutenant Polky started his law enforcement career in Camden in 2000 where he rose to the rank of Sergeant.  He left law enforcement for a short time to further his education before being hired by the Sheriff’s Office in 2014. He was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 2015. Lieutenant Polky is a Police Instructor in Drug Recognition as an Expert, Advanced Roadside Impairment Detection, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and Breath Testing Devices. The Patrol Administrator is responsible for the supervision of the operational aspects of patrol services, including specialized patrol services and all related administration, and is responsible for the Office in the absence of the Sheriff and Chief Deputy. Lieutenant Polky also recently retired as a First Sergeant in the National Guard after serving 21 years. The Sheriff and Chief are always grateful for the service of the veterans that are employed at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Jail.

You're not the only one who is looking forward to your annual holiday shopping. Thieves who can't wait to get your credit or debit card information are also looking forward to it!

And with expanded shopping hours and month-long cyber sales, there's no time like now to read these tips from Maine Identity Services, LLC:

            * DO NOT USE YOUR DEBIT CARD

Your debit card can give a hacker an open door into your bank accounts, so don't use it to shop. Under the laws that govern the fraudulent use of your debit card, you may lose some or all of the amounts involved if you don't respond in time to the theft. And even the new computer chip cards won't protect you if you are using it to shop over the internet.

            * USE A PRE-PAID CREDIT CARD

For online and in store shopping, consider using a pre-paid credit card. These can be quickly obtained and will not allow a thief access to your bank or other credit card accounts. Plus, a pre-paid card has the added benefit of letting you limit spending before you start shopping.

            * CHECK THE ATM AREA CAREFULLY

Tug on the key pad and the debit card slot to make sure that no skimming devices are reading your information as you enter it. Check the area around the ATM machine to look for what may be hidden cameras or other devices.

            * DO NOT LEAVE YOUR WALLET OR PURSE IN YOUR CAR

A locked car door is no protection from a thief who wants your checkbook or credit and debit cards. It's always "shopping season"

for these thieves who operate in organized gangs- so make it a practice never to leave these items in your vehicle - no matter how quickly you expect to return.

            * TAKE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD OUT OF YOUR WALLET

Your social security number is prized information for a thief because it can be used and re-used for repeated fraudulent activities. If you must carry the number with you, write the number on a separate piece of paper as if it was a phone number (place a "1" as the first or last number to make it appear as a ten-digit phone number.) In this way, the information will appear as (XXX) XXX-XXX1 instead of your social security number XXX-XX-XXXX.

            * CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS

If you have favorite online shopping sites, make sure that you are using a different password for each one. Using the same password across all the internet sites you visit means that hackers only have to have your password from one site to be able to use your identity to shop on other sites or use your financial accounts.

            * RECORD YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION

Write down the number of the credit card you will be using to shop, in case the card is lost - or worse - someone helps themselves to it by picking your pocket. Before you leave home, make sure that you have recorded the number of the card and the customer service number of the card issuer so that you can call immediately to report it as missing.

            * IS IT THE REAL WEBSITE?

It's easy to be lured to a website for deals that sound too good to be true - and thieves are hoping that will happen. Make sure that any website you visit to make purchases is the real deal. Don't open links from attachments, instead use your browser to go to the business' actual web site to make your purchase. If you are still in doubt, either don't make the purchase (one less thing for poor old Santa to carry) or phone the legitimate store number and make the purchase via phone.

Suspected overdose death in Cushing; Karl Crute, Jr. and Ranae Robbins of Cushing Arrested - November 16, 2016

Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) conducted an investigation yesterday as the result of a suspected overdose death in Cushing. 

At approximately 6:30 a.m. yesterday morning, the Sheriff’s Office was called to a residence in Cushing regarding a male, Christopher Delano, 52, of Cushing found deceased at his home by a friend.  He was last seen at approximately 11:30 the night before.  Investigation revealed drug related activity and the Mid-Coast Task Force of MDEA was called to assist.  Actual cause of death will not be determined until an autopsy is done by the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office. 

Subsequently, the investigation lead to both agencies executing a search warrant at another residence in Cushing.  That warrant resulted in two people being arrested and charged with Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs, Class B, Felony.  Karl Crute Jr., 43, and Ranae Robbins, 45, both of Cushing remain at Knox County Jail.  Confiscated at the house was 5 grams of heroin, $1,000 in cash believed to be related to proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs, a loaded semi-automatic rifle, and 3 hand guns with other drug paraphernalia.  The investigation by both agencies is ongoing.

Accident on Route 17 in Hope - November 13, 2016

Knox County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a two vehicle crash on Main St. (Rt.17) in Hope just before 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. 

Kelly McGlothlin, 55, of Windsor was driving her 2008 Ford SUV and was apparently attempting a u-turn from the breakdown lane, initially heading east. Charlotte Henderson, 80, of Washington was operating her 2014 Dodge van, also driving east.  McGlothlin turned in front of Henderson.  Henderson was unable to avoid striking McGlothlin on the driver’s side. 

Henderson was transported to the hospital by a family member to be checked. McGlothlin was transported by Northeast Ambulance for possible head injury. McGlothlin was unconscious initially, but had regained consciousness prior to being transported. 

Hope and Rockport Fire Departments also assisted at the scene. 

Scam Alert: Medicare Fraud

Medicare Annual Enrollment runs through December 7th, and it's a banner time for Medicare fraud.

Be aware of ads that promise medical equipment being covered 100% by Medicare, like the one that might appear in the newspaper offering a free back brace, or the TV infomercial claiming you can get anything to ease your pain with no money out of pocket. Medicare only covers durable medical equipment that is medically necessary with a doctor's prescription. Scammers hope you don't know this. They want your Medicare number so they can fraudulently bill Medicare. Plus, since your Medicare number is the same as your Social Security number, there are additional dangers of giving that information out, such as identity theft.

Be a fraud fighter! If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam.

Brendan J. Gray arrested and charged with Class A Felony of Gross Sexual Assault - October 21, 2016

Knox County Sheriff’s Detective Justin Twitchell arrested Brendan J. Gray, 19, of Warren Friday afternoon, charging Gray with a Class A Felony of Gross Sexual Assault. 

Detective Twitchell was notified by Thomaston Police Sgt. Hoppe that a parent of a child in Thomaston, filing a complaint on behalf of their child, under the age of 12, of the offense.  Sgt. Hoppe notified the Knox County Sheriff’s Office as the assault allegedly occurred in Warren. 

Detective Twitchell interviewed the suspect and based on that interview arrested Gray and transported him to Knox County Jail. 

Gray remains at Knox County Jail and held without opportunity to bail until arraignment at the first of the week.
