Sheriff's Log: January 15 - 21, 2017

The Knox County Sheriff's Office responded to 282 calls for service for the period of January 15th thru 21st, 2017. An arrest or summons does not constitute a finding of guilt. An individual charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at criminal proceedings.

Jan 15

Deputy Nathaniel Jack and Sergeant John Palmer responded to a report of a domestic assault in Warren. Dep. Jack arrested Michael E. Grant, 53, of Warren, for Domestic Violence Assault.

Dep. Scott Redmun conducted a traffic stop in Warren. Paul Heino, 41, of Thomaston, was summoned for Operating a Defective Motor Vehicle, Failure to Produce Valid Inspection, Failure to Produce Evidence of Insurance, and Violation of Conditional Release.

Jan 16

Dep. Redmun, Dep. Arthur Smith, and Sgt. Matthew Elwell responded to the report of a disorderly male in Friendship. Dep. Smith summoned a 17-year-old Juvenile for Disorderly Conduct.

Sgt. Palmer responded to the report of a theft in Warren. Candice Jones, 41, of Waldoboro, was arrested for Theft by Unauthorized Taking and Jonathan Jones, 41, of Waldoboro, was summoned for Theft by Unauthorized Taking.

Dep. Smith responded to a traffic crash in Hope. Rachel Ripley, 25, of Hope, struck a deer on Barnestown Rd. The vehicle sustained functional damage and no injuries reported.

Jan 17

Dep. Robert Potter responded to a traffic crash on Vinalhaven. Patrick Gasperini, 28, of Vinalhaven, died at the hospital while being treated for injuries he sustained. The crash is under investigation.

Dep. Paul Spear conducted a traffic stop in Cushing. Shanon Lafrance, 45, of Cushing, was summoned for Operating after License Suspension.

Dep. Spear conducted a wanted person’s check in Rockland. James Makie, 51, of Cushing, was arrested on an Arrest Warrant.

Jan 18

Deputies Redmun and Potter responded to the report of a theft on Vinalhaven; the incident is under investigation.

Sgt. Lance Mitchell responded to a traffic crash in Warren. Emily Weiss, 40, of Warren, lost control of her vehicle, due to slippery road conditions, on Eastern Rd. and struck a tree. The vehicle sustained functional damage and minor injuries were reported.

Sgt. Mitchell conducted a wanted person’s check in Washington. Allen Shenett, 51, of Washington, was arrested on an Arrest Warrant.

Detective Dwight Burtis responded to the report of a protection order violation in Rockland, the incident is under investigation.

Deputies Jeremy Joslyn and Spear responded to the report of a probation violation in Friendship. Dep. Joslyn arrested Jonathan Sevon, 42, of Friendship, for Violation of Probation.

Jan 19

Dep. Smith conducted a traffic stop in Cushing. Travis Robinson, 34, of Cushing, was summoned for Speeding.

Dep. Smith responded to the report of a theft in Friendship, the incident is under investigation.

Dep. Smith responded to a report of identity theft in Washington, the incident is under investigation.

Sgt. Mitchell responded to the report of a missing person from Saint George. The individual was located by Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office Deputies on January 20th, subject was safe and healthy.

Dep. Joslyn conducted a wanted person’s check in Cushing. Brittany Maloney, 29, of Cushing, was arrested on an Arrest Warrant.

Dep. Joslyn and Sgt. Mitchell responded to the report of a traffic crash in Warren. Shane Stockbridge, 22, of Warren, rolled his snowmobile on an ice bank on Depot Rd. The vehicle sustained functional damage and Stockbridge was taken to the hospital for injuries.

Jan 20

Deputies Pinkham and Joslyn conducted a wanted person’s check in Rockland. Dep. Joslyn arrested Danica Miller, 21, of Warren on an Arrest Warrant.

Dep. Pinkham responded to the report of a bad check in Union, the incident is under investigation.

Dep. Smith and Sgt. Mitchell responded to the report of a traffic crash in St. George. Kyle Clough, 24, of St. George, was following Christian Dehlinger, 56, of Rockland, too closely and was unable to stop when Dehlinger began to slow down for a stopped school bus on the River Rd. Clough and Dehlinger’s vehicles were towed due to disabling damage. Dehlinger was taken to the hospital for injuries.

Dep. Potter responded to the report of a theft on Vinalhaven, the incident is under investigation.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office received 259 calls for service from January 8th - 14th, 2017. Some of the calls responded to included agency assists, animal problems, bail and warrant checks, business and residential alarms, business and residential property checks, check-ins, citizen assists, civil disputes, court paper service, crash reconstructions, crisis interventions, death investigations, drug evaluations, finger printing, forensic mapping, nuisances complaints, motor vehicle crashes, police information, police K-9 tracks, school visits, sex offender registrations, shellfishing compliance, suspicious persons and circumstances, traffic hazards, and traffic stops. Jan 8

Following a suspicious person’s complaint in Cushing, Deputy Jeremy Joslyn arrested Richard Butler, 37, of Rockland, for Terrorizing with a Dangerous Weapon and Furnishing Scheduled Drugs. Dep. Joslyn also arrested Joshua Weaver, 31, of Rockland, for Possession of Drugs and Drug Paraphernalia.

Jan 9

Dep. Paul Spear responded to the report of a motor vehicle burglary in Rockport, the incident is under investigation.

Dep. Arthur Smith and Sergeant Matthew Elwell responded to the report of a domestic assault in Warren. The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of Deputies. A temporary warrant for Domestic Violence Terrorizing, Aggravated Assault, and Violation of Conditional Release was issued on Lauren Tozier, 44, of Warren.

Following a wanted person’s check in Warren, Dep. Joslyn arrested Lauren Tozier, 44, of Warren, on an Arrest Warrant.

Following a wanted person’s check in Warren, Dep. Alicia Gordon arrested, Amanda Tozier, 33, of Warren, on an Arrest Warrant.

Lieutenant Reginald Walker responded to a report of identity theft in South Thomaston, the incident is under investigation.

Following a wanted person check in Rockland, Dep. Spear arrested William Costigan, 55, of Thomaston, on an Arrest Warrant.

Following a traffic stop in Appleton, Dep. Smith summoned Jessica Hudson, 21, of Bremen, for Failure to Display Valid Inspection.

Following a traffic stop in Union, Dep. Gordon summoned Todd Matson, 39, of Union, for Speeding and Failure to Provide Insurance.

Following a traffic stop in Warren, Dep. Paul Pinkham summoned Christian Kolofsky, 44, of Vinalhaven, for Failure to Display Valid Inspection.

Dep. Smith responded to a report of theft in Owls Head, the incident is under investigation.

Following a wanted person check in Hope, Dep. Joslyn arrested Richard Stanton, 30, of Hope, on an Arrest Warrant.

Following a wanted person check in Rockland, Dep. Gordon arrested Melanie Allen, 42, of Union, on an Arrest Warrant.

Jan 13

Deputies Joslyn, Gordon, and Sgt. Lance Mitchell responded to the report of a domestic assault in Washington. The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of Deputies. A temporary warrant for Domestic Violence Terrorizing, Criminal Threatening, and Aggravated Assault was issued on Brandon Klein, 32, of Washington.

Following a wanted person check in Rockland, Dep. Pinkham arrested Thomas Powell, 25, of Friendship, on an Arrest Warrant.

Following a check for a wanted person in Washington, Dep. Joslyn arrested Brandon Klein, 32, of Washington. Klein was also charged with Violation of Probation.

Following the report of a protection order violation in Cushing, Dep. Spear arrested Jesse Grant, 22, of Cushing, for Violation of Protection from Abuse Order.

Jan 14

Following a traffic stop in Appleton, Dep. Joslyn summoned Philip Pease, 82, of Union, for Operating Without a License.

Following a traffic stop in Rockland, Dep. Redmun summoned Brandon McClure, 19, of Rockland, for Operating Without a License and Failure to Provide Insurance.

Fatal Accident on Vinalhaven - January 17, 2017

On January 17, 2017, at approximately 12:00 PM, Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Rob Potter responded to a single vehicle crash on the Lands Island Rd. on Vinalhaven.  A 2016 Dodge Truck, driven by Patrick Gasperini, 28, of Vinalhaven reportedly crashed in to a large tree and rolled over.  Although Gasperini was conscious and alert at the scene and was assisted by rescue personnel to the waiting ambulance, Gasperini died at the hospital due to the extent of internal injuries he had suffered. 

Prior to the crash, witnesses reported seeing a black Dodge pickup truck travel past them at a high rate of speed. After passing them, the truck ran head-on into a large tree, rolled about 100 feet, and came to rest in a group of rocks at the bottom of a steep embankment.

From statements made by Gasperini at the scene, Deputy Potter believes there was a medical issue prior to the crash.    

The crash is still under investigation.  Deputy Potter was assisted at the scene by Vinalhaven Fire and EMS.

Following a traffic stop in South Thomaston, Dep. Pinkham summoned Robert Batty, 24, of Owls Head, for Possession of Marijuana.

Meet Knox County Lieutenant Patrick Polky!

Sheriff Donna Dennison and Chief Deputy Tim Carroll announce the promotion of Patrick Polky of St. George to the rank of Lieutenant as the new Patrol Administrator for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Lieutenant Polky started his law enforcement career in Camden in 2000 where he rose to the rank of Sergeant.  He left law enforcement for a short time to further his education before being hired by the Sheriff’s Office in 2014. He was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 2015. Lieutenant Polky is a Police Instructor in Drug Recognition as an Expert, Advanced Roadside Impairment Detection, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and Breath Testing Devices. The Patrol Administrator is responsible for the supervision of the operational aspects of patrol services, including specialized patrol services and all related administration, and is responsible for the Office in the absence of the Sheriff and Chief Deputy. Lieutenant Polky also recently retired as a First Sergeant in the National Guard after serving 21 years. The Sheriff and Chief are always grateful for the service of the veterans that are employed at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Jail.
